220 V equipment — generally workable in the UK

This unit is specified at 220 V, against UK mains of 230 V. That difference is within the tolerance of most equipment. Where the specification also shows 60 Hz, motors and timer circuits may behave differently on a 50 Hz supply — ask us if the application is sensitive to either.

Model MSMB1250E: a 48 in industrial magnetic pan and box sheet metal brake. Maximum capacity 16 gauge in mild steel and aluminium, 20 gauge in stainless steel. 220 V single phase, 12 A.

A magnetic brake clamps using an electromagnet rather than mechanical fingers, which is what allows pan and box work — forming four-sided trays and boxes where conventional fingers would obstruct the previous bend.

Note the capacity difference by material: 16 gauge in mild steel and aluminium, but 20 gauge in stainless. Stainless work-hardens and demands considerably more force, and exceeding the rating damages the machine rather than merely producing a poor bend.

At 48 in width this suits ductwork, flashings, trays and general fabrication.

Supply note: specified at 220 V, 60 Hz single phase. UK mains is 230 V at 50 Hz. The voltage is close enough to be workable, but the frequency is not the same, and 60 Hz equipment with motors or timer circuits can behave differently on a 50 Hz supply.
